Congratulations UC Berkeley Class of 2026!
Graduating from UC Berkeley is a huge milestone, and graduation photos are the perfect way to celebrate everything you've worked so hard for. As a Bay Area graduation photographer - and recent graduate myself - I’ve photographed countless college seniors at campuses all around the Bay. UC Berkeley is easily one of my favorites (seriously, it’s so picturesque)! In this guide, I’ll share the best photo spots, what to bring to your session, and overall what to expect from a UC Berkeley graduation photoshoot.
Why take grad photos on campus?
UC Berkeley’s campus is instantly recognizable and full of history, character, and beautiful architecture. Some campuses are not so photo-ready, but that is not the case with Berkeley! This campus has stunning backdrops around every corner, but it’s often the quieter spots—the ones you passed on your way to class every day—that hold the most meaning. Years from now, when you look back on your graduation photos, these locations will remind you of late nights, hard work, lifelong friendships, and how much you grew during your time here.
Graduation photos are perfect for:
- Announcements and thank-you cards
- Family keepsakes
- LinkedIn profiles
- Social media graduation posts
- Celebrating & sharing with friends and loved ones!
Best UC Berkeley Grad Photo Locations
Sather Gate
A classic Berkeley landmark and one of the most popular graduation photo spots. Sather Gate is often where I start my grad sessions, and from there it's a short walking distance to some other great backdrops.
Doe Library
The columns and grand architecture at Doe Library create an elegant, editorial look. This location is especially beautiful for clean, polished images. I like to take some photos right in front on the steps, and also at a bit of a distance to see the scale of it in the background.
Campanile (Sather Tower)
Probably the most iconic Berkeley backdrop. The Campanile works well for wide shots, where you might actually stand a distance in front of it to see the full height of it behind you.
Memorial Glade
If you’re looking for something more natural and relaxed, Memorial Glade offers open green space with the Campanile in the background. This spot is great for candid photos, showing off other props, or a quick change into your Cal Berkeley gear.
Faculty Glade
Faculty Glade is one of UC Berkeley’s most peaceful and underrated photo locations. Surrounded by redwood trees, this area offers a quiet, shaded setting with a distinctly NorCal feel. It’s perfect for graduates who love nature but still want to feel connected to the campus.
Hearst Memorial Mining Building
The inside of the Hearst Memorial Mining Building is one of UC Berkeley’s most stunning hidden gems for graduation photos. With its grand arches, detailed columns, and dramatic natural light, the interior feels elegant and historic. It’s perfect for editorial-style portraits that feel polished, timeless, and unmistakably Berkeley.
South Hall
South Hall is the oldest building on UC Berkeley’s campus and offers a beautiful mix of history and charm. Its brick exterior, arched windows, and surrounding greenery create a classic backdrop for graduation photos. This spot is ideal for graduates who want something iconic but a little quieter than the main campus landmarks.
UC Botanical Garden
Located a short drive from campus, the UC Botanical Garden offers an incredible variety of backdrops, including flower gardens and a dedicated redwood grove. It’s a popular choice for graduates who want a more curated, nature-forward look.
What to wear & bring to your graduation photoshoot:
Cap, Gown, & Sashes
Even if you don't want to wear your cap or gown, be sure to bring them. This graduation gear makes for great props - I like to have my grads toss their caps in the air, or have their gown draped over their shoulder. If you do plan to wear your cap, it’s a good idea to practice how you want it to sit ahead of time so you feel confident during your session.
Please be sure to iron your gown and sashes before your session! I cannot edit out wrinkles, and unfortunately a wrinkly sash can really ruin an otherwise polished look. I'd also recommend bringing safety pins and bobby pins if needed for adjustments!
Wear Neutral, Solid Colors
A lot of people choose to wear white for their graduation photos, but you definitely don't have to! The main thing is to avoid busy patterns and definitely no logos. Neutrals like white, tan, and black do work well because they look good with almost any backdrop.
Dresses, jumpsuits, or tailored outfits all work well. Dress it up with accessories, and make sure whatever you wear is photo-ready (please do not assume that I can edit out bra straps, wrinkles, tags, etc.)
Bring Touch Ups & an Outfit Change (if desired)
I would recommend bringing with you a small bag filled with essentials like lip gloss, powder, and a comb for touch ups. If your session involves walking long distances across campus, consider bringing a change of shoes — especially if you’re wearing heels — so you can stay comfortable between locations.
If your session is an hour or longer, we should also have time for an outfit change! Some people like to do one formal and one casual look. Others change into an ultra-professional look for the perfect LinkedIn headshot, or something related to their sports team or club they were a part of at the school.
Props + Champagne!
Feel free to bring props related to your school or major. Some ideas could be your school flag, textbooks, or specific items related to your study of focus — such as a stethoscope for nursing students. And of course, the best way to wrap up a graduation session is with a champagne pop! Popping and spraying champagne is a super fun moment that really makes you remember why we're here - to celebrate your accomplishment!
When to Schedule your UC Berkeley Graduation Photos
Spring graduation season books up fast (especially for weekends) so it’s best to schedule your photoshoot at least 4-6 weeks in advance to secure your ideal date and time. Weekends generally seem to be quieter on campus which makes it easier to avoid other students in the background of your photos. You know your campus best - if there's a pocket of time like early morning or right before sunset when your campus is quiet, we could also do it on a weekday. Keep in mind that it takes time for your edited photos to be delivered - I personally quote 4–6 weeks for the final gallery, although I do send 5+ sneak peeks within a week of the session date. If you need your photos back by a certain date, perhaps for a graduation party or Instagram post, make sure to plan your session date accordingly!
Solo vs. Group Sessions
Graduating with friends? Group sessions are a great way to celebrate together while still getting individual photos. These are especially popular for: friend groups, roommates, and sororities / fraternities. The way I do group photoshoots is that we would move from spot to spot on campus and get big group photos and quick solo portraits at each desired location. My solo graduation sessions are perfect if you want more time at a variety of backdrops, and more personalized attention with posing and guidance to get a mix of classic portraits and candid moments.
If you’re worried about posing—don’t be!
What a Graduation Session with me is like
The vast majority of my clients have never had professional photos taken before, and often share with me before we start that they're "awkward" in photos. Yet I'm constantly being booked for the very reason of my clients coming across as super natural looking! That's because I'm super hands on with posing.
During your session, I’ll:
- Guide you through natural, flattering poses
- Help with hand placement and posture
- Capture both posed and candid moments
- Keep the experience relaxed and fun

FAQ
How long does a session last?
By far my most popular package option is my hour-long "Gold" session. This seems to be the perfect amount of time to get comfortable in front of the camera, and play around with different poses and backdrops within a location. I also offer a 30 minute "Silver" session, which can be great if you're on a tighter budget. But with half the time and half the amount of photos returned, expect a lot less variety in the images. My 2 hour long "Diamond" session I would only recommend for Group Sessions, or for Solos that want to explore multiple locations and outfit changes.
Can I bring my friends and family?
Friends and family are welcome to accompany you! They can help hype you up from behind the camera, and help carry your things across campus to save time. Please let me know in advance if anyone is accompanying you and if you want a few photos with them.
What about the weather?
Weather is always something to keep in mind when planning your graduation photoshoot. I do allow people to reschedule their sessions in the case of rain. It can also be a fun, spontaneous look to "embrace" the rain, use my clear umbrellas, or take the session indoors. The libraries on campus offer beautiful backdrops, and there are several greenhouses in the UC Botanical Garden.
I do not allow rescheduling for wind or cloudiness - overcast days actually provide some of the best, softest lighting!
How many edited photos will I receive?
It depends on which package you select. I deliver 50+ edited photos with my Silver Package, 100+ with my Gold Package, and 200+ with my Diamond Package.
