Congratulations Santa Clara University Class of 2026!

Graduating from Santa Clara University is a major milestone, and your graduation photos should reflect everything you’ve accomplished during your time on campus. From its historic Mission-style architecture to its palm-lined walkways, SCU offers a beautiful and meaningful setting for your graduation portraits.

As a Bay Area graduation photographer, I’ve photographed college seniors across many campuses, and Santa Clara University consistently stands out for its picturesque blend of nature and architecture. Below is a complete guide to planning your Santa Clara University graduation photos, including where to take photos, what to wear, and how to prepare for your session.

Why take grad photos on campus?

Santa Clara University’s campus blends historic charm with a bright, modern atmosphere. Graduation photos here aren’t just about marking the end of your degree—they’re about documenting the memories you’ve made, the people you’ve met, and the growth you’ve experienced along the way.

Many graduates use their photos for:

  • Graduation announcements
  • Family keepsakes
  • Framed prints
  • Social media posts
  • LinkedIn and other professional profiles

Best Santa Clara University Grad Photo Locations

Mission Santa Clara de Asís

One of the most iconic landmarks on campus, this Spanish Mission offers historic architecture for a timeless, elegant backdrop.

Palm Court & Central Lawn

With rows of palm trees and open green space, this area creates a bright, California-inspired look. It’s perfect for relaxed portraits and walking shots.

Mission Gardens

The Mission Gardens at Santa Clara University offer a peaceful, beautifully landscaped setting for graduation photos. With manicured greenery, shaded paths, and flower-filled archways, this area feels serene and perfect for portraits.

The Fountain

The fountain is a popular and visually striking photo location, with the Mission in the background. I often like to end my sessions here, with a fun champagne pop!

Hidden Corners Around Campus

Santa Clara University has many smaller courtyards and shaded walkways that are beautiful, yet often go unnoticed. These locations are great for intimate portraits and crowd-free shooting, especially during the weeks leading up to the graduation ceremony when there are often other students taking their pictures at some of the more popular spots.

Nobili Hall

Nobili Hall is a meaningful graduation photo location for many Santa Clara University students, particularly those in the humanities and social sciences. Its classic exterior and central campus location make it a great backdrop for portraits that feel academic, polished, and deeply connected to your time at SCU.

Buildings Connected to Your Major

Many graduates choose to take photos outside buildings that hold personal significance—whether it’s where most of your classes were held, where you spent long nights studying, or where key memories were made. Including these locations adds a meaningful, personal layer to your graduation photos and helps tell the full story of your academic journey.

Campus Greenery & Courtyards

Santa Clara University is known for its lush landscaping, palm trees, and quiet courtyards tucked throughout campus. These green spaces provide beautiful natural light and a relaxed atmosphere, making them perfect for candid photos and portraits that feel effortless and authentic.

What to wear & bring to your graduation photoshoot:

Cap, Gown & Sashes

Even if you don’t plan on wearing your cap and gown for every photo, make sure to bring them to your session. Graduation can be styled and posed in creative ways, whether that’s a cap toss or wearing the gown draped over your shoulder.

Ahead of your session, be sure to steam or press your gown, stoles, and sashes. Creases and wrinkles will not be removed during editing and can take away from an otherwise clean, finished look. Safety pins or bobby pins can also come in handy for quick fixes and adjustments on the day of your photoshoot.

Wear Neutral, Solid Colors

When choosing an outfit for your graduation photos, white is a popular option—but it’s far from the only one. The most important guideline is to keep things simple by avoiding loud patterns and visible logos. Soft, neutral tones such as ivory, beige, tan, and black tend to photograph beautifully and complement a wide range of campus settings.

Bring Touch Ups & an Outfit Change (if desired)

I recommend bringing a small essentials kit to your graduation photoshoot, including items like lip balm, face powder, and a brush for quick touch-ups. If your session includes walking between multiple locations on campus, a comfy second pair of shoes can be especially helpful—particularly if you plan to wear heels.

For sessions lasting an hour or more, there’s often time to change outfits as well. Some graduates choose to include both a dressed-up look and a more casual option, while others switch into a polished, professional outfit for LinkedIn or career-related photos. You’re also welcome to incorporate clothing that reflects a club, sport, or organization that played an important role in your college experience.

Props & Champagne

You’re welcome to bring props that reflect your school experience or academic focus. Items like a university flag, textbooks, or tools connected to your major—such as a stethoscope for nursing students—can add a personal, meaningful touch to your graduation photos. To end the session on a celebratory note, many graduates choose to include a champagne pop. The movement and energy make for fun, memorable images and perfectly capture the excitement of celebrating such a big achievement.

When to Schedule your Santa Clara Graduation Photos

Spring graduation season fills up quickly—especially on weekends—so it’s a good idea to book your photoshoot at least 4–6 weeks in advance to secure your preferred date and time. Weekends tend to be quieter on campus, which helps keep other students out of your shots, but if you know a calm time on weekdays—like early morning or just before sunset—we can schedule around that instead.

It’s also important to plan ahead for your edited photos. I typically deliver the full gallery within 4–6 weeks, but I do provide 5+ sneak peek images within a week of your session. If you need your photos by a specific date—for a graduation party, announcement, or social media post—make sure your session is scheduled accordingly to give ample time for editing and delivery.

Solo vs. Group Sessions

Group graduation sessions are a fun way to celebrate with your friends while still capturing individual portraits. They’re especially popular for roommates, close friend groups, and members of sororities or fraternities. During a group session, we typically move around campus, taking larger group shots as well as quick individual portraits at each location you choose.

If you prefer a more personalized experience, solo graduation sessions may be an ideal choice for you. These allow extra time at multiple backdrops, more guidance with posing, and a balance of classic portraits and candid moments that truly reflect your personality and style.

FAQ

How long does a session last?

By far my most popular package option is my hour-long "Gold" session. This seems to be the perfect amount of time to get comfortable in front of the camera, and play around with different poses and backdrops within a location. I also offer a 30 minute "Silver" session, which can be great if you're on a tighter budget. But with half the time and half the amount of photos returned, expect a lot less variety in the images. My 2 hour long "Diamond" session I would only recommend for Group Sessions, or for Solos that want to explore multiple locations and outfit changes.

Can I bring my friends & family?

Friends and family are more than welcome to come with you to your photoshoot! Please notify me in advance if you plan to have anyone accompany you, and specifically if you want to include any photos with them.

What about the weather?

This is a question I get often, and definitely something to keep in mind! I do allow people to reschedule their sessions in the case of rain. In my opinion, it can also be a fun look to "embrace" the rain, use my clear umbrellas, or take the session indoors.

However, I don't do rescheduling for wind or cloudiness - overcast days actually provide some of the best, softest lighting!

How many edited photos will I receive?

It depends on which package you select. I deliver 50+ edited photos with my Silver Package, 100+ with my Gold Package, and 200+ with my Diamond Package.
